This project is a recreational center for Simon’s Rock College of Bard, a small college on a rustic campus in the Berkshires of Western Massachusetts.
The center houses a 25-yard pool, a basketball court and running track, squash courts, climbing wall, juice bar, fitness center and multipurpose room.
The site is at the main gateway to the campus. The center’s COST PER SQ FT$146.00FEATURED IN2000 Architectural Portfolio are accommodated under roofs that slope gently toward the ground. The building’s two wings are angled from one another astride a central entrance.
The building’s finishes are simple. Its ceilings are southern yellow pine, and its structure is exposed southern yellow pine trusses over the pool. There are painted steel trusses over the basketball court; and galvanized steel in the lobbies.
Panels are integrated into clerestories in the pool and basketball court to make a connection to the sky without distracting athletes. The building’s unique combination of soft lighting, soaring space and natural materials intends to be contemplative yet stimulating.
