Twinsburg High School/Fitness Center is a compelling example of a school/community partnership—one that offers students access to a broad range of facilities while minimizing taxpayer cost for community amenities and services. The combined high school and fitness center represents the state-of-the-art in terms of building design and technology, as well as the COST PER SQ FT$118.20FEATURED IN2000 Architectural Portfolio effort behind the project’s development.
Completed under budget and on schedule, Twinsburg High School/Fitness Center is located on a 55-acre site. Twinsburg is a small but growing suburban community about 20 miles outside Cleveland. The city needed to replace its 40-year-old high school, which was crowded and outdated. Following community approval of funding for a new high school, the city proposed a partnership with the school district to build a public fitness center in conjunction with the new school. Community support was strong, yielding immediate voter approval. The school district and the city began a collaborative planning process involving school administrators, faculty, students, municipal officials, local residents and the design team.
The new high school, which will meet the projected increase in enrollment over the next several years, accommodates up to 1,450 students in grades 9 to 12. Major features include a two-level academic wing with 36 classrooms and a centrally located media center, a 1,050-seat auditorium, a large dining commons area, and a gymnasium with spectator seating for 2,000.
A community fieldhouse and natatorium are connected to the athletic wing of the school, with a separate entrance for the public. Students have access to the courts and the competition-caliber pool, in addition to the high school’s own gym and physical-fitness facilities.
The motto for Twinsburg City Schools is “Where Schools and Communities are One.” The successful partnership at Twinsburg High School/Fitness Center is strong evidence of the community’s support for this mission. Comments have ranged from “This is the most state-of-the-art school in the United States right now” (from the school’s technology coordinator) to “The color and the vibe of the whole place is great” (student). A local resident said during a tour, “It’s a remarkable building. It almost defies description.” One comment in particular from a teacher stands out: “Now we realize how Alice felt when she walked into Wonderland.”
