The new Monona Grove High School houses 1,100 students on a block schedule. This three-story building was programmed to be used heavily by the community during after-school hours. These features include a three-station gymnasium; an eight-lane, 25-meter swimming pool; a 700-person auditorium; a television-production studio; a community career center; a fitness and COST PER SQ FT$91.62FEATURED IN2000 Architectural Portfolio studio; and a multipurpose commons space.
Each department’s classrooms surround an enclosed resource space used by students for independent and small-group study and research.
The building was designed to be a part of the fabric of the existing neighborhood and to enhance its stature as a community icon. The curved entry relates to the site design and acts as a welcoming gesture to students, staff, parents and visitors.
The biggest challenge of this project was to build the facility on the same small suburban site as the existing building while school remained in session. This was done over the course of two school years, at times using parts of each building.
