Century Junior High School, a two-level educational facility for grades 7 to 9, provides flexibility for 900 students and the community at large. Century’s commons serves as a student social/performance hall, lobby for athletic events and community gathering center. The innovative, multipurpose room with reverse tiers allows space changes from lecture (operable COST PER SQ FT$95.36CITATIONMiddle School CitationFEATURED IN2000 Architectural Portfolio closed) to stage format (operable wall open). The commons provides seating, while tiers acts as performance risers.
Century’s six houses, with four classrooms each, have resource areas for student use, including computers, soft seating and shared storage.
Each house has: science lab, fully equipped—gas, air, water and variable current; two conference areas, promoting team-style learning; shared staff centers, between house pairs, enhancing staff communication.
Additional outstanding design elements include a state-of-the-art media center and a professional-quality television studio.
The exterior of earth-toned brick and stucco complements neighboring facilities. The interior color palette draws upon 1920s tans and greens, with black and silver accents.
For security, the facility design provides a lockdown to one administration entry point, with additional lockdown points for flexible after-hours use.
"This is a beautiful, functional school...good plan and flow. Resource area is well-placed."—2000 Architectural Portfolio jury
