Hillsborough Township, situated in the southern edge of Somerset County, N.J., has witnessed tremendous population growth. The architect was commissioned to design a new elementary school for 700 students in grades K to 5.
The site chosen for the new school is a 50-acre tract of partially wooded farm land centrally located in the school district. The lot size COST PER SQ FT$107.45FEATURED IN2000 Architectural Portfolio the site design to devote roughly half of the available land to play fields, which consists of three regulation size soccer fields, a baseball field and a softball field for high school students to use for practice. The ball fields, which have a built-in underground sprinkler system, were the first phase of construction. The site has adequate utilities and siting to allow future expansions.
The final building plan took the shape of a spoke-and-wheel concept. The core facilities such as gymnasium, cafeteria, library and the administration offices are at the center, and the classrooms, organized in two wings, radiate out from the core facilities.
