The school district decided to abandon the existing elementary school located on an inadequate site and relocate it to the high school site.
A small, 43-year-old elementary school attached to the high school was converted into board and administration offices, and a new K-9 elementary school added. Each facility functions independently, and the linear exterior COST PER SQ FT$93.00FEATURED IN2000 Architectural Portfolio expresses the individual character of the two schools.
The two-story elementary was designed around a large courtyard to introduce natural light. The selection of pastel colors creates an upbeat feeling. The school is equipped with the latest technology and networked with the other buildings in the district.
To allow for community use, the library/media center, a junior-high-sized gymnasium and a cafetorium have separate entrances at each end of the courtyard. The media center features an outdoor trellis with a serpentine walk. The geometric form of the library’s translucent skylight adds interest to the complex.
