Remodeling Lake County High School was part of a comprehensive, ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$214.00FEATURED IN2017 Architectural Portfolio approach by the Lake County School District to reverse years of low performance and reinvest in its schools. A 61,000-square-foot addition included a two-story high school wing and a one-story junior high school wing, which enabled the district to move seventh and eighth grades out of the crowded middle school.
The project also updated 60,000 square feet of common areas, including the school’s auditorium, cafeteria, kitchen, administrative office and athletic facilities. Existing portions of the building and site, including the main entry, were updated to maximize student safety.
Integrated technology, flexible spaces, and amenities accommodating the daily needs of students, faculty and the community-at-large were important goals for this project. The design team worked with stakeholders throughout the planning process to translate their specifications into a high-performing, 21st-century learning facility.
New learning environments—science laboratories, project labs and updated vocational-specific classrooms—were designed for modern curriculum and future adaptations. Open breakout areas, accessible faculty neighborhoods and lounge spaces, complete with furnishings that integrate comfort and technology, were added to give students a range of choices to accommodate their learning styles.
Designed with a deep respect for the close-knit mining community of Leadville, the project—completed at an elevation of 10,200 feet above sea level—was the first LEED-certified building in the city.
