Southwest High School, Additions and Alterations

The main drivers of this project were increasing student enrollment, adding instructional space and core facilities, and enhancing building security.
A secure entry and multipurpose commons were included in the central addition that bridged the original east and west buildings; it has become the heart of the school. The introduction of “instructional hubs” and “garages” provide varied learning settings beyond the classroom to engage different group sizes, social patterns and learning modalities.
Special attention was paid to preserve and celebrate elements of the existing building. The use of school colors and nautical imagery helps reinforce the school’s identity. The spirit of Southwest High School extends throughout the building.
