Two years after delivering an award-winning charter school for grades 7 to 12, the design-build contractor was hired to convert and expand an 86,000-square-foot former big box store into a K-6 school for project-based learning. The fast-tracked initial phase called for a space for 800 students to be completed in only 20 weeks.

Sustainable features included ample daylighting, a BMS system and rapidly renewable or recycled building materials.
A plain exterior facade was re-imaged by adding woodgrain aluminum panels with bright colored accents, punctuated by colorful tensile canopies that created a bold and distinctive identity.
Amenities include a full-service cafeteria and dining terrace, a 205-seat presentation hall, a regulation gym with a floating hardwood floor and a theatrical stage, and an indoor-outdoor playground. Smartboard display technology is integrated throughout the facility. “Flex” classrooms have operable glass partitions adapted from commercial garage doors. Curving beam-like elements, which the designers dubbed “sky noodles,” float above public corridors and resource areas, coordinating with brightly colored light fixtures to add free-form liveliness and energy.
