John Sergio Fisher & Associates, Inc. served as architect and acoustician for the new Dance, Music & Science Centers for the Orange County School of The Arts. The building houses 14 2,000-square-feet ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCAPACITY1,380COST PER SQ FT$242.00FEATURED IN2016 Architectural Portfolio studios with varying floor surfaces for different dance forms. It also contains eight 1,000-square-feet science labs, three instrumental music/choir rehearsal facilities, 16 music practice rooms, and dressing rooms. The classrooms are wrapped around a central courtyard for outdoor gatherings, with an outdoor stage and a student pick-up/drop-off area to improve campus access.
The building’s design fuses the industrial look of exposed concrete masonry unit exterior, bare metal decking and concrete floors with more elegant interior features such as the sleek glass lantern entryway illuminated with decorative pendant light fixtures and warm, rich hardwood floors in the dance studios.
Energy-saving features include glass fins and perforated metal canopies acting as sun-control devices and 521 photovoltaic cells on the roof producing 170.4 KW of power. The main street facade continually changes with photographs of dancers, performers or artwork printed on large scrims with school colors, making the building dynamic and innovative.
