The Middleton-Cross Plains Area School District sought to reduce crowding in its elementary and middle schools by changing its configuration from PreK/5-8 to PreK-4/5-8. Bray Architects used a 21st-century educational design approach to provide a high-performance, sustainably designed addition.
This stunning 257,000-square-foot addition and renovation was built with no disruption to school operations over a 2.5-year, phased demolition/construction schedule. The design team assimilated the surrounding Pheasant Branch Conservancy into its site plan by creating an outdoor classroom/amphitheater—an extension of an environmental education center used by students and the community. Students and teachers have access to flexible collaboration space and furniture throughout the school, and natural light spills from tall, clerestory windows into the academic wings, learning spaces, and entrance corridors.
Non-traditional learning styles are nurtured with modern design techniques to create a thriving community for students and teachers. Students, parents and teachers are thrilled, and the school has welcomed more students than the district has ever seen.
