The University of Mary Washington (UMW) wanted its new Campus Center to celebrate student life on campus while upholding the traditions and legacy of the institution. Situated on the main campus in historic Fredericksburg, Va., the new four-story brick COST PER SQ FT$385.00FEATURED IN2016 Architectural Portfolio cast stone structure takes its design cues from the surrounding buildings and incorporates architectural language found throughout the campus.
The building pairs traditional details, inherent to UMW’s identity, with modern finishes and technology. The $47.3 million project was designed to receive LEED Silver certification and have flexible spaces that meet the needs of today’s students as well as future generations.
The interior planning of the University Center seeks to facilitate student interaction and actively promote co-curricular learning on campus. Each floor of the building serves a different purpose and is connected by double-height spaces that provide visual connections between the floors. Ample amounts of glazing create inviting, naturally lighted interior spaces that offer views both to the outside and into other spaces.
