The project is the realization of extensive renovations and additions to an elementary school built more than 40 years ago. The school’s square footage was more than doubled from 19,200 square feet to 44,599 square feet, to accommodate significant changes in educational curriculum and enrollment since originally built in 1956.
The original building’s interior was CAPACITY407COST PER SQ FT$113.68FEATURED IN1999 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYRenovation reconfigured to create larger, more functional classrooms, allowing teachers flexibility to adapt instructional methods as new philosophies dictate in today’s changing educational environment. The expansion accommodates specialty areas, such as an art room, science room, computer lab, music rooms, gymnasium, special education and a guidance/resource and health suite.
The project’s design presented a unique opportunity to completely wrap the original school, creating the illusion that the school was completely rebuilt. The renovations and additions have improved the school’s visual element and have created a more exciting learning environment.
Another design feature is a provision made for the future addition of an outdoor art court accessible from the school’s art classroom. This space will give art teachers some flexibility in designing their lesson plans.
