Nassau Community College, Student Services Center
Garden City, New York
The Student Services Center (SSC) at Nassau Community College in Long Island, N.Y., encompasses 16,000 square feet of existing space and encloses an additional 17,000 square feet of adjacent exterior space. The SSC combines student service departments into a one-stop service center and is situated below the existing central Campus Plaza. The SSC utilizes the open concrete CAPACITY33,000COST PER SQ FT$327.00FEATURED IN2016 Educational Interiors ShowcaseINTERIOR CATEGORYStudent Centers/Service Areas as its roof.
The SSC’s central location helps establish a feeling of openness and connection to the campus and provides ample light for staff and visitors through the use of glass front offices and exterior walls. The exposed concrete coffered ceiling creates a sense of height and contributes to an inviting below-ground space.
Of utmost importance to the college was transforming the SSC, built within a 1970s-era campus of concrete and brown metal, into a space of warmth and invitation. In the waiting area, neutral colors punctuated by pops of “College Blue and Orange” in exposed round ductwork, service counter walls and cushioned lobby seating keep the space inviting.
The prominent display of the college’s logo in a carpet insert, as well as on lobby walls and signage, provides a collegiate feel with subtle branding connections. Similarly, each service department has been outfitted with demountable partition walls and cubicles of varying colors so each has a feeling of its own space while still being part of the overall SSC.
The SSC uses modern technology in the form of a new student service queuing system that offers 10 student service functions in one location, connected by a common waiting area. Visual display screens and student self-serve kiosks help create an efficient, expedited student service process for all visitors.
