Miller Dining Commons represents Montana State’s dining flagship based on student capacity served and year-round operation. The project’s primary goal: Increasing the overall dining capacity to accommodate the growing student population while enhancing the dining experience.

Transitionary materials lead diners from one exhibition cooking area to the next: Toscana’s tossed pizza dough, Tamari Grill’s sizzle and flames, Grazier’s golden-brown rotisserie chicken. It has become home for students and faculty to spend time studying, socializing, and enjoying fresh-cooked cuisine.
Design challenges included renovating a round, unreinforced masonry building in a high seismic activity zone, all while upgrading two entry points on opposite sides of the facility.
Eliminating a weighty mechanical penthouse resulted in an exposed steel structure at the epicenter. This new space now boasts a daylighted, vaulted commons area surrounded on all sides by display cooking venues, perimeter daylight dining and lounge seating.
