Indian Mountain School Student Center
Indian Mountain School is a preK-9 independent boarding school serving 186 students on a 600-acre campus in Lakeville, Conn. Flansburgh Architects delivered a music, art and technology building specifically designed for collaborative, cross-disciplinary, project-based learning.
The Student Center features three visual arts studios, a fabrication lab, music COST PER SQ FT$320.00CITATIONCombined-Level School CitationFEATURED IN2015 Architectural Portfolio studios, practice rooms, a common room, a café, an office and storage space. Classrooms and labs have sliding barn doors that open onto a shared gallery. Meeting spaces open onto a visitor commons. The flexible design provides a common space, which functions as a project space during the day and a student lounge in the evening (with kitchenette and café).
The form of the building recalls a traditional New England barn; it has a sloped tin roof, exposed timbers and boards, and batten siding. A large window provides dramatic views of Indian Mountain, the school’s namesake. The western side of the building, particularly the common room, opens directly onto the landscape, and every classroom has a door to the outside.
