Sherwood Elementary

Springfield, Missouri

The new Sherwood Elementary replaced a crowded and aging building with a new facility at a new location. It is situated on a mostly wooded site with a greenway trail along the east and south edge of the property. The beautiful setting led to a natural sciences theme for the new school, as well as a decision to design the building to be net-zero-energy capable.

The design encourages innovative teaching and learning styles through flexible open spaces, co-teaching studios, a project studio and collaboration spaces. The school also is the first in Missouri to partner with, and provide dedicated and shared spaces for, the Boys and Girls Club.
With the involvement of students, staff and the community during the design phase, the vision of the school evolved into a facility that speaks to the environment, pays homage to the history of the old Sherwood, integrates the community, and provides a fun and safe learning environment for the students.
