With considerable growth in its elementary enrollment, Cedar Falls needed to expand Hansen Elementary to serve four sections of grades K to 6. To overcome the challenges of a limited site and a deteriorating original circular open-plan structure, the design team carried out a phased renovation, addition, and replacement of sections of the building.

Subsequent work built additional classrooms and common spaces that included a full-sized gymnasium that opens to a student commons and functions as a raised performing stage. The commons itself is filled with natural light through large amounts of glass and opens to an exterior plaza at the rear of the school.
The final phase of work added a new overall look to the facility and created an identifiable entrance. This new front also added a school office and security vestibule for the building, which is outfitted with electronic locking and compartmentalization to provide an enhanced level of safety.
