The Joint Institute of Advanced Materials is designed to be a state-of-the-art materials science research and teaching facility and is the first building on the new Cherokee Farms Research Campus. The facility is organized in a four-story rectilinear bar running east to west. This orientation enables the use of sun shading and allows natural lighting to be integrated. The main entry and quad access is on the first floor, and opens into a multilevel lobby space with access to the seminar room, conference room, and second and third floors.

Offices are situated around the building perimeter, and the building core is made up of laboratory and support spaces.

The comprehensive laboratory and office space will provide a platform for advanced research on materials at the atomic and subatomic level and will provide a variety of research initiatives.

The project is pursuing LEED Silver certification.
