Hanover College, Lynn Hall Renovation
Hanover had a dilemma that many colleges and universities face: an abandoned iconic building in the center of campus. School leaders didn’t know how to use it, but they couldn’t bear to tear it down.
SPGB repurposed Lynn Hall into an integrated live-learn community. The high-bay space was sculpted into student residences and 24/7 campus event space. A campus spine was cut through the building to organize two large classrooms, informal study lounges, residential suites and faculty offices. The design preserved the monumental windows, wood gymnasium floor, interior brick walls and riveted steel arches. Windows were added to the rear gym façade to visually connect to outdoor campus areas.
“For many years this building was waiting for a new life,” says Dr. Sue Dewine, president of Hanover College. “Today, if you listen carefully, you can still hear the basketballs hitting the floorboards and the roar of the crowd as winning Hanover teams racked up yet another victory.”
