Pine Street School is a new school situated in a historic tower in Manhattan’s financial district. Converting this space into a school presented a series of exciting challenges; the building as a palimpsest, urban confines, verticality and its overarching interiority juxtaposed with the contemporary pedagogical approaches. The spaces are designed to be open, extendable and adaptable, and the transitory and communal spaces provide a semblance of the outdoors.
The design approach at Pine Street School draws little distinction between programmed spaces such as classrooms, and support spaces such as corridors and stairs. All spaces are designed to encourage both formal and informal interaction. The unusual floor plans reinforce the idea of wonder and surprise. The inspiration is both nature and the city: often dense and meandering, but always open to larger spaces. The design intent is to instill and reward a sense of curiosity and exploration and to support the school’s inquiry-based curriculum.
