The Min Kao Electrical Engineering & Computer Science Facility gave a much needed home to one of the largest departments on campus. The design set a new standard in science facilities on the UT Knoxville campus by combining research laboratories, classrooms and administrative offices for 90 faculty and staff members. These members currently serve 500 undergraduates COST PER SQ FT$191.94FEATURED IN2014 Architectural Portfolio 200 graduate students daily.
Due to its uniquely compact and steeply sloping site, there are entrances on the first and fifth of the six-floor building, linked by a dramatic atrium connector. The innovative 150,000-square-foot facility was designed to foster an atmosphere that promotes creativity and collaborative learning specifically including common areas, lounges, glass walls and terraces.
Below the eaves of the roof is a sixth level exterior plaza deck for enjoying the outdoors while studying. All interior finishes are high end with poured-in-place terrazzo flooring throughout the building.
Min Kao was designed to meet the needs of the constantly changing electrical engineering & computer science department for the next 25 to 50 years.
