The Somerset Educational Services Commission has launched this project, located adjacent to its existing facility, to extend its outreach to the communities it serves by providing vocational opportunities for at-risk students who are normally placed out of district.
New operations will focus on the teaching of grocery store jobs, warehousing, COST PER SQ FT$368.00FEATURED IN2014 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYInterior Work in Progress keeping, etc. This facility will partner with a local community college, the County Vocational & Technical High School and a local grocery store, which will operate a store out of the building.
The design concept for this building draws on the emphasis of “community” in the inception and planned operation. A “Main Street” bridges the expansion to the existing facility at one end and opens up to embrace incoming parents and students at the other. Serving as the primary organization of the building, all major spaces are accessed from Main Street, which culminates in a “town square” at the entry.
Centered as an outreach to the community, Main Street is illuminated by the roof above and expressed in the exterior of the building in the circular blue “outreaching arm” metal roof. The school represents a place where students can learn and come together while also engaging in the larger community.
