At the Virginia Institute of Marine Science (VIMS), the ultimate goal is to provide practical solutions that lead to a healthy coastal eco-system. VIMS insisted upon this Wachapreague site because it is easy to access clean, high-salinity seawater, which allows researchers to observe marine organisms under conditions that mimic those of the coastal COST PER SQ FT$342.58FEATURED IN2013 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized ocean.
After developing an understanding of the many codes and regulations that were necessary for this site, the design of this floodproof facility began. This 8,000-square-foot structure houses the seawater testing laboratory and support-functions facility. It is designed to withstand high-velocity flooding conditions. It provides the engineering needed to support the pumping of almost 2,000 gallons per minute of seawater into the building.
Using raw materials and clean lines, this building is appropriate to withstand the environmental forces and is highly functional for the scientists researching there.
