Kuss Middle School is constructed in an industrial area of the city of Fall River on a site with extensive changes in grade. The design reflects the industrial heritage of the city as well as its context among several active mill buildings. Embracing the challenge of a steeply sloping site, the architect found design opportunities that afforded commanding views of Mount COST PER SQ FT$265.00FEATURED IN2013 Architectural Portfolio Bay. The library in particular takes advantage of this view. Students can watch as various commercial vessels navigate Fall River’s working waterfront.
Team-teaching was incorporated into the three-story academic wing. A special feature of each of the team areas is central gathering places, which can be used for small team assemblies as well as for on-going displays of student work. The school contains numerous sustainable design features, including daylighting, energy-efficient heating and lighting systems, excellent indoor air quality and acoustical comfort.
