After a meeting with the library director and board members, a program was developed that would provide additional adult reading areas, tutoring/quiet rooms, a section devoted to teens, a multipurpose meeting room and a separate children’s activity area.
Based on the orientation of the existing structure on the site, a 4,671-square-foot addition was CAPACITY346COST PER SQ FT$430.26FEATURED IN2013 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYCommunity Center/Joint Use along the front/south elevation. Because of the tight and narrow site condition, a unique semicircular design was developed that used a mixture of glazing, stone and wood paneling throughout this addition. The interior features vaulted wood ceilings, pendulum lighting fixtures and carpeted flooring that creates a warm, relaxing environment. This addition includes the adult reading area with comfortable lounge furniture and tables, along with low scattered book/magazine shelving, a separate youth area, a reference room, isolated tutoring rooms, a quiet room and a local history area.
A separate, 1,671-square-foot children’s activity room was added to the back/north side of the existing library, adjacent to the entrance closest to the parking area. This space is separated from the remaining areas by a partial glass wall and door, plus numerous book stacks. An accessible toilet is situated directly off the children’s room, along with two large furniture storage rooms, in order to open up the room for other activities. Several other interior spaces within the existing library were updated and renovated, plus a new sprinkler system was added.
