This K-4 public school is set in northeastern Pennsylvania’s rural farmland. Placed in rolling fields and dense woodlands among barns and other farm buildings, it takes its character from these simple circumstances. The 38,000-square-foot school replaces an outmoded facility, adds an all-day kindergarten program and gives each age group its own special place within CAPACITY390COST PER SQ FT$105.27FEATURED IN1998 Architectural Portfolio building.
The plan is organized with wings radiating from its heart, strategically locating the entry to allow direct access to the library, administration and multipurpose room from an airy, light-filled central gathering space. Three of the wings contain classrooms and the fourth accommodates large group activity areas. The expansive pitched-roof structure uses prominently exposed laminated wood beams and wood decking.
Sheltered by green shingled, sloped roofs and walled in a combination of cedar siding and white masonry, the school reflects the nature of the surrounding agricultural structures and forests and makes a non-institutional and child-oriented environment for learning.
