The state of Mississippi boasts of its affordable and dynamic community college system. Northeast Mississippi Community College (NEMCC) in Booneville, Miss., serves one of the largest on-campus student populations of the 15 Mississippi junior colleges, yet it lacked a student center. Before construction, the campus was split by a four-lane road without a central COST PER SQ FT$193.00FEATURED IN2013 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized to give students quick access to administrative offices. The campus also was in need of a distinct character-marker, a plaza that would serve as an attractive forefront to reflect the academic spirit of the college and provide a scenic, social commons for students.
The recently completed 36,530-square-foot Student Services Center and plaza were situated to create a more incubated campus and offer students central access to the business office, college administration offices, admissions and records, post office, and print and copy shop—departments that formerly were housed in five different locations on campus. The planned quad offers a landscaped green space in the center of campus, enhancing the community atmosphere for the NEMCC campus.
