The architectural design intentionally blends program spaces to better serve its users. Several administrative, learning and instructional spaces were included within this new facility, enhancing its connectivity to the rest of the recreation uses. The multiple large recreation and academic venues support existing and new program offerings. This facility provides a new home for the recreation, health promotions and physical-education departments, into which the design team had the opportunity to incorporate many functional improvements, departmental efficiencies and beneficial spatial relationships.

Visual transparency and access is the thesis of this building design. Throughout three stories of recreation and academic space, the interior architecture enhances the ability for users to visually experience program areas, while creating many highly social areas where they can see and be seen by others.

Dynamic form and composition of the building’s exterior is an important element of this project. The design needed to exist complementary to the new student union, situated across the street, and yet also reflect the different use and activity inherent to wellness and recreation. Metal panels and brick harmonize with the existing campus vocabulary, while the larger expanses of glass showcase the activity of the building, and are layered with metal sun screens in response to the Florida climate.

This placement is intended to complete the northern plaza’s western edge, creating a new center of social and recreation activity for the UNF campus. Along with the student union, this student-centered building is poised to become the new hub of student life.
