In a historic building adjacent to the harbor, St. George Library Teen Center is the only space catering to young adults among Staten Island public libraries. Inspired by the spectacular view from the glass windows in the main reading room and the community’s connection to the harbor, the Teen Center creates a relaxed environment for teens COST PER SQ FT$150.00FEATURED IN2013 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYLibraries/Media CentersSUB CATEGORYCommunity Center/Joint Use learn.
Ocean colors invigorate the space; books and magazines scale the blue-colored walls; and neon green furniture provides a place to lounge in front of a plasma TV. Curved plastic “sails” span the ceiling, simulating the movement of the ocean wind. A bowed wooden wall replicates the ribs of a ship’s hull. At the center, a circular computer workstation provides a place for teens to conduct research or search the library database. The tired space was transformed into a place fit for writing workshops, science projects, video gaming and even Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments.
The Teen Center creates a dynamic space, separate from the main area, giving teens the freedom to interact and explore the library’s resources and multimedia technology.
