The expansion of Andrew G. Truxal Library required a complete reconfiguration of the existing 43,000 square feet with a 32,000-square-foot addition.

The design concentrates 20 new collaborative study rooms and specialized study spaces in the renovated library. The remaining programs and reading areas surround a dramatic two-story space, the Technology Learning ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$216.00FEATURED IN2013 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYLibraries/Media Centers (TLC), a modern equivalent of the 19th-century library’s grand reading room, symbolically and functionally the heart of the transformed library.

The TLC is enclosed with full-height glass embedded with a ceramic pattern to control sunlight and reduce interior glare. Immediately adjacent to the college’s entrance drive, the iconic glass facade, which symbolizes new technologies, has become the updated image of the college to all who enter.

The project provided the opportunity to reconfigure the surrounding site, which was re-graded and paved to provide full pedestrian accessibility to the adjacent, elevated quadrangle, a major student gathering space. Seating walls are integrated throughout, and a small but essential rain garden, coupled with the library’s new vegetated roof, controls stormwater runoff.
