Part of this land was sold to the town, and the rest has been developed by the school district to include this new building.
The new 11,500-square-foot building contains a 1,000-square-foot community room, a 7,000-square-foot gymnasium and locker rooms. It is used by the school district’s athletics program, as well as local civic and community groups such as the PTA, Girl Scouts, youth soccer and Little League baseball. Parking and fields are shared by all. This project is seeking LEED silver certification through design priorities that included provisions for daylighting, photovoltaic panels, heightened indoor air quality, significant reductions in energy consumption, and the use of non-renewable resources and materials.
The architecture has been developed to express the shared public functions of the building. Translucent panels give off a subtle "glow" in the evening and provide natural light during the day.
