The new Sports & Recreation Center at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology provides facilities for varsity sports, intramural sports and personal fitness activities.
Anchoring the recreational core of the campus, the facility features a 70,000-square-foot fieldhouse, which includes a 200-meter track and basketball and tennis courts. Varsity basketball and volleyball COST PER SQ FT$106.25FEATURED IN1999 Architectural Portfolio played in a new 1,500-seat arena.
A new natatorium contains an eight-lane, 25-meter pool for competition and recreation. Two racquetball courts and a weight and fitness area also are provided for student and facility use. Supporting the entire facility are varsity and intramural locker rooms and a sports-medicine area.
A curved long-span truss roof covers the fieldhouse and arena, and establishes the building’s dominant architectural character. In the natatorium, a special tube-truss system was designed to resist the corrosive pool environment. Exterior cladding materials are insulated precast concrete panels at the base, insulated metal panel and translucent window panels.
The internal plan was developed to minimize circulation and to maximize visibility. All the major activity areas can be viewed from the entry-level lobby, which facilitates supervision while it showcases the use of the building. Open planning and daylighting help to make the facility welcoming and inviting.
