The Lehman College Child Care Center demonstrates the multiple advantages of industrialized building for a college that seeks to combine state-of-the-art design and sustainability with minimal campus disruption.
The project site is a yard between two large academic buildings and adjoins a public street and the campus walk. Site CAPACITY140COST PER SQ FT$500.00FEATURED IN2012 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized has been designed to provide accessible routes to the adjacent buildings. By providing a central lobby space, the project minimizes circulation and maximizes side-yard dimensions to accommodate campus circulation, a new playground, egress from neighboring buildings and sunlight.
Classrooms are designed with floor-to-ceiling sliding glass panels opening onto balconies with integrated plating beds and trellises. These create vertical gardens for cultivation by each classroom. Cleansed ventilation air is supplied to the building via the classrooms and the building’s integrated green walls.
The adjoining playground adheres to natural play guidelines, providing zones for play as an alternative to traditional playground equipment. The "imagination playground" blocks function with surface fountains to create multi-sensory, creative play experiences.
