Kean University needed a building to consolidate numerous science and mathematics disciplines. The center required flexible spaces focused on encouraging innovation and collaboration while embracing sustainability principles.
The Center for Science, Technology & Mathematics Education is situated on an open site on a major COST PER SQ FT$545.00FEATURED IN2012 Architectural Portfolio dividing the campus. The 110,000-square-foot building provides interdisciplinary teaching labs, classrooms, research and event space, establishing an architectural focal point uniting the university’s East and West campuses. The center’s floor plan responds to the dynamic nature of the site with angled floor plates and large expanses of glass to admit maximum daylight and at night, display the inner workings of the building.
The building embraces cutting-edge innovations in science teaching and lab planning, with environments that promote easy access to different teaching methodologies, and facilitate group discussion and collaboration.
The building’s design earned a LEED Innovation and Design credit for its custom solar shading. Six-inch-wide, transparent vertical "fins" attached at a 40-degree angle to the southwest-facing curtainwall system greatly reduce exposure to mid-afternoon sun.
