The new Edward Hynes Elementary School is a 600-student pre-K to 8 school with a full-size gymnasium, cafeteria, media center and performance center.
The new facility sits on one city block in the New Orleans Lakeview area, replacing the former 60,000-square-foot Hynes Elementary Charter School that was destroyed by hurricanes CAPACITY600COST PER SQ FT$185.62FEATURED IN2012 Architectural Portfolio and Rita. The first wing in this U-shaped building houses administration, student services, the main entry and media center. The two-story classroom wings are separated into age-appropriate neighborhoods along one side of the site. The third wing houses the gym, performance area and cafeteria. An outdoor amphitheater is used for assemblies and teaching on days with pleasant weather.
The final design addresses Lakeview’s traffic patterns, urban context, scale and an energy-conscious building orientation. Energy-saving features include:
•Daylight harvesting: light shelves, sun shades and auto-dimmers adjust light-fixture levels.
•East-west orientation on most teaching buildings.
•Occupancy sensors on lighting controls shut off all lights after 10 minutes of no motion.
•Energy-recovery system re-circulates conditioned air to mix with smaller amounts of outside fresh air.
