The Culinary Arts Center's large program is consolidated in one highly efficient showcase building situated across from the main campus. It was important for this new facility to be recognizable as part of the college. This was accomplished through the use of brick cladding with precast stone accents and Gothic arch forms to complement the brick heritage CAPACITY548COST PER SQ FT$226.00FEATURED IN2012 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized on the classic "East Coast"- style campus.
The building’s program includes three teaching kitchens, one teaching bakery, wine storage, retail bakery, restaurant and two multipurpose divisible smart classrooms that also serve as dining overflow and special-event spaces.
Heat buildup from each of these large kitchens is managed at the source by utilizing 100 percent outside air to balance airflow at the exhaust hoods. Because the culinary center is a learning environment, the kitchens and bakery are daylighted and feature extensive double-paned low-e glazing with views to the green campus quad and heritage oak trees. The hallways also feature two-story lightwells that flood the upper and lower floors with daylight, creating comfortable and inspiring learning conditions.
