The shaping force for the 179,000-square-foot Athletics and Events Center arose out of the analogy of the significance of an athlete breathing (the fundamental element of all human performance) and the ongoing desire for more energy-efficient facilities.
The program for the facility is focused on three main active spaces: the COST PER SQ FT$307.26FEATURED IN2012 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYPhysical-Education Facilities/Recreation CentersSUB CATEGORYSports Stadiums/Athletic Facilities fieldhouse, natatorium and outdoor turf field. As the primary indoor facility for Ithaca College, the fieldhouse needed to meet the practice, competition, intramurals, club and recreational needs for as many of the college students as possible.
The main hall at the center of the building (also used as a prefunction event space) is the gathering space and main central control point for the building; both the community event entry and the campus entry collect into this space. The building was set carefully into the natural sloped topography, allowing separate (and fully accessible) spectator and athlete circulation during events activities.
This project, driven by many topographical, cultural and sustainable design factors, likely will be eligible for LEED gold certification.
