Situated on a highly visible corner on the town’s Main Street, Ariel Hall’s existing structure was not equipped properly to meet the needs of Central Ohio Technical College’s (COTC) expanding student population. Challenged to fit a high-tech building into an early-20th-century context, this total interior renovation and ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONCOST PER SQ FT$96.26FEATURED IN2012 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYInterior RenovationSUB CATEGORYRenovation exterior facade upgrade gives students a sense of place and reflects the college’s commitment to being on the cutting edge of educational training.

The interior of the building was opened up for function and daylight, and two floors of classroom space were created from an existing movie theater. Remarkably, the existing functional space increased from 32,000 to 36,000 square feet. The addition of exterior glazing on a previously windowless side increases daylight in the building’s interior and makes a statement on the exterior.

A redefinement of the program of requirements also was developed to satisfy the college’s needs. New, flexible spaces with modern finishes include classrooms; nursing, simulation and chemistry/environmental science labs; administrative and faculty offices; and student lounge space. New mechanical, electrical, plumbing and technology systems also were included.

The project is seeking LEED silver certification.
