The 15.7-acre site slopes from the east property line behind the building, a total of 22 feet to a creek along the west side of the site. Preserving trees around the building was critical to Lone Star College despite heavy cut-and-fill procedures required for leveling the ground to place the buildings.
This center consists of ASSOCIATED FIRMArchi*Technics/3, Inc.COST PER SQ FT$158.42FEATURED IN2011 Architectural Portfolio buildings: an academic building and a shop building for workforce training, both supported by a central plant.
Designed as a prototype, this center will provide classroom space, science labs, learning commons and tutoring spaces. In the academic building, the workforce curriculum includes welding, HVAC machining and automobile technology.
Besides the administrative and faculty offices, support for student interaction with the college includes registration, counseling, testing and cashiers. To enhance their experience, students have designated seating areas throughout the facility and break areas for study, relaxation and eating.
Sustainable features include natural lighting, solar shading devices and increased thermal insulation. Rainwater collected from the roof is stored for irrigation.
