The Student Recreation & Wellness Center at Kent State University is a student-oriented facility programmed and designed to fulfill the expanding fitness, sports, leisure and lifestyle needs of the students. The center is sited at a new gateway to the campus, the intent being to make the facility as visibly prominent and inviting as possible.
Marking the main ASSOCIATED FIRMHastings & ChivettaCOST PER SQ FT$124.00FEATURED IN1999 Architectural Portfolio to the recreation center is a V-shaped canopy that becomes progressively wider and welcoming as visitors approach. This canopy shape continues inside, where it converts to a 45-foot-high, wedge-shaped mall area that ends at a 60-foot-wide glass span overlooking an outdoor pond. The abundance of natural light, greenery and seating areas emulates an inviting shopping-mall environment and allows visitors to see all of the activities offered. The strategy is to serve everyone, including those who just want to browse in the pro shop; enjoy the snack bar; or sit, relax and people-watch.
The facility includes spaces such as: natatorium with lap pool, recreation pool, whirlpool, sauna; four-court gym; floor hockey and indoor soccer gym; racquetball courts; running/walking track; climbing wall; aerobics room; and pro shop.
