The Mater Academy Music & Sports Pavilion is a 15,000-square-foot, two-story addition to an existing high school campus in Hialeah Gardens, Fla.
The pavilion was conceived as an addition of two sports and music-related program elements to an existing middle/high school facility, and organized around a COST PER SQ FT$147.00FEATURED IN2011 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSpecialized loggia.
The two main volumes, one dedicated to music education and the other to athletic programs, include locker rooms, weight-training room, general classrooms and offices, as well as a double-height band room, rehearsal studios and a small practice classroom. The band room opens onto the covered loggia, which acts both as a spillout area for lunch and a seating area for performances originating from the band room.
The design of the volumes, their texture, color and materiality are all consistent with the existing school, yet retain their own individuality and presence. The placement of the volumes and loggia also is intended to define and provide spatial containment for the outdoor recreational field immediately adjacent to the existing school.
Although the Music & Sports Pavilion is intended to address the programmatic needs of the school, it has become the civic center of the campus, as well as a central iconic structure on the landscape of the community at large.
