To highlight building systems, the mechanical room has been transformed into a 1,700- square-foot, glass-enclosed, exhibit space at the heart of the main lobby. All the piping and ductwork is color-coded and labeled so that the relationship between different pieces of equipment can be understood. The building mechanics have become both a showpiece as well as a teaching tool where faculty will use the functioning building equipment for instruction.
Skylights, clerestories and windows provide abundant daylight and access to natural views. To minimize occupant exposure to particulates and gases generated by soldering and welding, the lab wing has fan-filtering units and negative air pressure to keep these gases from migrating to other areas of the facility.
