Mount Pleasant Academy has played a central role in the lives of Mount Pleasant, S.C.’s "Old Village" residents for two centuries. The new facility was needed to replace the unsafe, 1960s-era building and classroom trailers. It incorporates state programmatic standards, such as science, computer and special-education spaces, a gym, as CAPACITY500COST PER SQ FT$201.59FEATURED IN2011 Architectural Portfolio as an increased capacity of 500 students.
The small site’s unique location and constraints required creative planning. The building is organized in a linear fashion with the sensitively scaled Welcome Center addressing the street; the two-story classroom wing follows. The core spaces anchor the building, and the dining room enjoys Intracoastal Waterway views. Agreements were made to share parking, a reduced bus-stacking length was negotiated, and an amphitheater was created to transition from the above-flood-plain FFE.
The architectural expression incorporates simple brick forms with generous glazed openings to provide sunlight to all learning spaces. The materials were chosen for their durability and contextual response. In the spirit of "less is more," customized solutions truly have made this facility the only one of its kind without compromising the integrity of the historic neighborhood.
