The owners wanted to create an environment where they could show their apprentices (plumbers, pipefitters, welders and HVAC&R technicians) about existing and new technology and equipment, foremost of which is the sustainable direction of their industry. The facility incorporates six labs, eight classrooms, a media center, bookstore and COST PER SQ FT$145.00FEATURED IN2011 Educational InteriorsINTERIOR CATEGORYVocational/Industrial arts offices.
To highlight building systems, the mechanical room has been transformed into a 1,700-square-foot, glass-enclosed exhibit space at the heart of the main lobby. All the piping and ductwork is color-coded and labeled so that the relationships among different equipment can be understood. The building mechanics have become a showpiece and a teaching tool where faculty will use the functioning building equipment for instruction.
Skylights, clerestories and windows provide abundant daylight and access to natural views. To minimize occupant exposure to particulates and gases generated by soldering and welding, the lab wing has fan-filtering units and negative air pressure to keep these gases from migrating to the remaining facility.
All of these features contribute to what is anticipated to be LEED gold certification.
