Reusing the building instead of demolishing the existing structure and constructing a new facility was a primary goal of the design. The interiors of the building were gutted to the structure (columns, slabs and perimeter walls) to make way for new mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems. New common spaces are provided in key locations to facilitate social interaction and study. The basement renovation features a theater room, kitchen, common laundry room and gaming gallery.
Accent colors provide an identity to each floor to help give new students a sense of home away from home.
The building is energy-efficient and exceeds the baseline performance rating for energy performance by 21 percent above the ASHRAE standard.
