A three-story, freestanding addition of 43,000 square feet to the Carmichael Gymnasium Complex establishes a new, but complementary architectural face to the complex. It accommodates program space for fitness, outdoor recreation, and cardiovascular programs on a site constrained by parking requirements and existing COST PER SQ FT$186.00FEATURED IN2010 Architectural PortfolioSUB CATEGORYSports Stadiums/Athletic Facilities circulation.
The degree of transparency of the building skin intentionally contrasts the visual weight of the existing complex to provide views from the addition to the adjacent athletic fields and to showcase the activities it contains. This contrast is balanced by establishing strong relationships to the existing buildings in terms of form, material, scale and structural rhythm.
The building is conditioned by two variable-air-volume handling units; all spaces have terminal reheat. Athletic spaces utilize CO2 monitoring to control ventilation air quantities. All heating potential, including domestic hot water, is generated from a campuswide steam loop by the use of heat exchangers in the new building. Cooling potential is obtained from a campus loop stemming from the main chiller plant.
