This school houses approximately 1,400 students and anticipates having 2,800 by 2010. Without needing a referendum, this community enlarged the school with a fieldhouse and classroom addition.
The addition includes: basketball/volleyball wood center court; 13 lap/mile track; physical-therapy/training rooms; athletic locker rooms sized to accommodate future growth; CAPACITY2,510COST PER SQ FT$122.43FEATURED IN1999 Architectural Portfolio accommodation for future classrooms and natatorium; 14 retractable backstops; district administration offices; athletic director’s offices; four classrooms; concessions area.
Two constraining factors were the location of the existing football/field track and the school’s parking lot. The addition worked around the track, while minimizing encroachment into the parking area.
Designing to a clear height of 30 feet, the fieldhouse uses indirect lighting, and has a clerestory or translucent glazing to bring in daylight without shadows.
The new entry stair draws spectators in and creates a separate entry for the district offices. A foyer on the south provides a connection for future growth.
The fieldhouse is surrounded with smaller masses to minimize the impact of its size. Brick and split-face concrete block match the existing building and limit the cost.
