Completed in 2009, Chanhassen High School quickly has become a landmark in this rapidly growing suburban community. Overlooking natural wetlands, the rolling site is terraced to fit the 2,000-student school, competition fields and site amenities.
The heart of the school is the central commons that serves as CAPACITY2,000COST PER SQ FT$182.72FEATURED IN2010 Architectural Portfolio "great room." It gathers people from the west public entrance and the east student/bus entrance, providing clear connections with the academic, athletic and performing-arts zones of the building.
The academic area is organized into thematic-based teams of 500 students, encircling the central media center, special-needs classrooms, and student common spaces. Science labs are grouped near each academic team with broad south-facing views. Art and industrial-tech studios are situated conveniently for student teams on the lower "walkout" level.
The performing-arts center includes a 650-seat auditorium, black box and music rooms, which are accessed from the central commons. The athletic complex is carved into the natural hillside with a 2,200-seat top-loaded gymnasium and lower level walk-out access to the exterior stadiums and fields.
