Stony Brook University wanted to modernize and expand its existing dining center. The design team focused on opportunities to accommodate a diverse campus population, including the undergraduate housing community and the on-campus apartment dwellers. The architect performed an in-depth programming, adjacency and stacking study to define needs and understand the complexity of the dining/administration addition and renovation; the existing facility was operational during this construction period. The curved form of the dining center defines itself as a meeting point in the community while fitting into the larger campus context.
Issues such as safety, security, productivity, cost and schedule were considered in order to develop a solution for Stony Brook University. The project will pursue LEED silver certification and meet the future needs of a diverse group of students.
